メリタヨコエビ属から1新種を記載。分類学に限定せず動物学という括りで発表したい、という意向でズーサイに掲載されたとのことです。パンダメリタヨコエビ M. panda「より」もジャイアントパンダAiluropoda melanoleuca に似ていることからつけられた和名が、学界内外で大きな話題となりました。パンダメリタヨコエビとは系統的に離れている点も生物学的な示唆深さをもっています。
この和名はパンダ愛好家のエッセイスト・藤岡みなみ氏が考案したもので、記載論文の筆頭著者である富川先生と藤岡氏とのトークイベントが開催されるなど、文化的側面からのアプローチが目立ちました。他には「パンダパンダメリタヨコエビ」「メリヒン」といった候補もあったようですが、斬新さとさりげなさが同居した「ヨリパンダメリタヨコエビ」には光るものがあります。そして種小名も和名に寄せてつけられたとのことです。なお、パラタイプに「時空の切れ目で採取されたサンプル」が含まれており、これは永遠の謎となりそうです。
