パンダメリタヨコエビ Melita panda
NHKの特集でスケッチがチラ見せされたり、広大の図書館に原画が展示されたり、じわじわ盛り上がっていたメリタヨコエビ科 Melitidae メリタヨコエビ属の新種がついに記載されました。海外のサイトでも取り上げられていますね。
そうとしか言いようのない模様から、かねてよりヨコエビストの間で「パンダメリタ」と呼ばれていた集団の一部です。タイプ産地は卓越したジャイアントパンダの繁殖技術をもつ某動物園の近くであるため、これも必然的な帰着の命名といえるでしょう。あまりに出来すぎていることから「人為的にパンダ模様にしたものではないか」という陰謀論さえ飛び交っているようですが、たとえ写真でもジャイアントパンダを見たことがあれば本種の体色が厳密には「パンダ柄」ではなく「逆パンダ柄」であることに気づかないはずはなく、また白浜だけに棲息するものでもないことから、パンダ模様に染められたなどという妄言には一顧だにする価値もないことは言うまでもありません（そういう意味では、狙って白浜産標本をタイプに指定したように思えます）（知らんけど）。
形態的にはカギメリタヨコエビに近いようですが、体色のほかにオスの第1咬脚前節前縁の突出部に大きな特徴があります。また、有山 (2022) に掲載されているパンダ感のある未記載種 Melita sp. 2 とは、第3尾肢外肢の節数で識別が可能です。
第二著者にメリタヨコエビ類の大家である大和茂之先生が入っており、しばらくヨコエビの記載研究をお休みされていた大和先生の復帰作という点でも非常に話題性のある論文といえます。無料で読めます。
